Team History

FIRST Robotics Team 1551, The Grapes of Wrath, is located in Naples, New York.

Team 1551 is made up of the Naples Junior/Senior High School students and local homeschooled children, mentored by their parents and teachers. Founded in 2005 by the school Physics teacher Patrick Freivald, the team is made up of about 20 students from grades 7 to 12.

Team 1551 runs year round with training, fundraising, and build projects in the off-season. We demo our robot at the Grape festival, Science Fair, and school functions. We also have two FLL teams, both in Naples. Through the team, the school offers an Intro to Robotics class, teaching the basics of robot design.

Despite being a small team, we have impacted the community in many ways. Students have participated in Operation Santa, painting over graffiti, building a playground, donating and volunteering at Red Cross blood drives, participating in the Let's Solve Water competition by Xylem, and planting American Chestnut trees. The team also hosted a science fair at the Naples Elementary School for one year.

Sponsors

We are currently sponsored by The Bausch Foundation,  Naples Central School District,  PTC, Mr. Fix-It, OC Driveshaft, Coach & Equipment, and other local businesses.

We mostly gain funds during the local grape festival where we run booths for the juice wheel and robotics club. The juice wheel is borrowed from the Naples Rotary and the sparkling grape juice is from Arbor Hill Winery. At the club booth we sell 3D printed keychains, bracelets, and Metal Earth models.
